Buying wine can be a difficult endeavor, particularly if you are interested in more than the run-of-the-mill varieties. Finding a wine club, though, will open your world to a greater range of wines. It might not even make a horrendous dent in your wallet.

What Is a Wine Club?

If you’ve ever been a member of a buying club, you’ve already got the basic idea: a group of individuals pool their time and resources to purchase a product in bulk. A very specific sort of buying club, a wine club provides a few services. Expert buyers pick out some of the best wines from the world based on certain criteria, or even just from a specific region. A vast number of choices are available. Because of the large volume, the price on each case and bottle is often better than the local shop.

Essentially, a good wine club can be your best friend in the wine world. Whether or not you’re on the lookout for a good vintage, an unusual varietal, a few bottles to age, or just a good bottle to serve with Thursday evening’s dinner, a wine club will make most any wine in the world available for purchase.

The Basics to Consider

Varieties of Wine

Some clubs may focus on particular sorts of wines. Be certain to avoid those which will not provide you with the access you prefer. If you don’t care for many French wines, avoid a club which has an emphasis on French wines. When most white wines are not to your tastes, don’t join a wine club with Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio on the list most often.

Some clubs may give you an introductory case of wine in return for your commitment for a certain length of time. If you are unsatisfied, however, terminating your membership may require you to reimburse the club for the cost of the wine. So long as you are happy with what you believe the club will provide, you’ve just gotten yourself into a buying club for one of your favorite beverages and had some free drinks!

Methods of payment can vary. Some may charge by the year, by the case you purchase, or request a monthly debit from your checking account. If you aren’t comfortable with the payment plan, think very hard about whether or not you will join.

Other details can vary widely. Will you have to fetch the wine from a central location? How often will you have to order? Is the wine sent out on a schedule, meaning you will need to specifically skip a shipment if needed? All these are questions to consider while performing your research.

Making the Final Decision

As with many things, it is your money, and you are ultimately the one who has to plunk it down on the table. Research any club very carefully. Talk to a current member; talk to a former member if possible to learn why they chose to leave. Do not get swept away in the marketing or the thought of the rare Champagne you can finally purchase. Search carefully and you will be rewarded with access to the world’s enormous bounty of wine.
